Corning Unicam: Fiber Cleavers

Fiber cleavers are an important tool for fiber splicing and Corning Unicam has quite a few suitable models of fiber cleaver that are available for you the consumer to choose from. Before we get into what exactly each of them does it may be best to explain the process of how a fiber cleaver exactly works. So let’s waste no time and get down to business, shall we?

To be short and sweet about the process, fiber cleavers cut the optical fibers made of class at a precise angle of ninety degrees. This isn’t the easiest process in the world but it can be achieved and many of Unicam’s cleavers can do this with no problem and with an easy learning curve for those that aren’t familiar with the process. The reason it’s important to cut at this particular angle is to prepare for the time when the optical fiber has to be combined with another optical fiber. This process necessitates a smooth and even surface to put these two cables together.

Now how exactly does this happen? Well first, you’ll make up the fiber with a scribing tool and create what’s called a tensile stress from there a crack begins and goes across the fiber cross section. Some cleavers will create this first but nonetheless the process is quite the same.

Listed below are the models of fiber cleavers that Unicam manufactures:

FBC 0-15: This particular cleaver is compact and designed very carefully to ensure a very simple installation with Unicam connectors. Regardless of how versed you are with fiber cleaving this particular tool is of a consistent quality and is reliable in most cases that a cleaver of this type is needed. There is no need for a work surface to perform seamless cleaving.

FBC-006: For this particular Unicam product this cleaver provides an easy means for mechanical splicing or low-loss fusion. It’s fairly simple and works rather quality to produce efficient and reusable cleavers for fibers that are both single and multi-mode. This particular model will cleave all fibers that are coated at a level of 250 and 900 μm.

FBC-012: This model can cut 12 fibers with an easy one off process. It also comes with a more than adequate add on guide to help you in performing operations with ease when it comes to your fiber cleaving. This add on accessory can simply be removed to handle other grades of fiber making this particular cleaver very versatile. It also has a 12 position blade that can also be replaced with at a minimum amount of difficulty.

FBC-001: Last but not least is the FBC-001 model of fiber cleaver from Unicam. This device is more than suitable for taking care of both single and multi-mode fiber cleaving. It also does a bang up job with UniCam connector installation. Therefore you can’t go wrong with this particular model either.

Well there you go dear reader with our guide to Unicam’s fiber cleaving! We hope that this article informed you on the very basics of how the whole process works. We know you can pull it off and with Unicam’s devotion to quality we’ll know you’ll be in safe hands no matter what model of fiber cleaver you decide to choose.
